Light Made with Hanji

When hanji meets light, the temperature of a space changes. About the gentle and abundant world created by craft artist Setbyol Oh’s oh-licht lighting.

Sitting at a worktable in her studio — a former fire station converted into a creative space in Berlin-Wedding — her process of folding and attaching hanji sheet by sheet appears like a meditative gesture.

“Craft, I think, begins with exploring a material. It takes a very long time to truly familiarize yourself with one material through your hands and to understand its properties. When that process merges with a creative motif, it finally becomes a craft artwork.”

The alchemy of oh-licht — transforming paper into light — will continue to illuminate the quiet, unfolding stories that rise from softly rounded spaces.

2025 has been a truly meaningful year for me.

At the end of last year, I decided to begin collaborating with companies, and over the course of this year I was fortunate to realize two major projects.

I believe the exhibition at the Homo Faber Biennale in Venice in 2024 created a strong resonance.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who trusted me with commissions in 2025, who supported me in continuing my work, and who encouraged and appreciated what I do. And I thank all those who make it possible for me to live doing what I love.

Wishing you merry christmas
and a happy and radiant year 2026.

The lighting pieces of oh-licht are known for their distinct asymmetrical forms. Some begin as rounded shapes that extend into sharp points, while others curve in smooth, organic lines, almost like living organisms. Do you feel a sense of freedom when creating these non-geometric shapes?

For a long time, I focused on circular forms. But at some point, I began to feel that perfectly symmetrical shapes are somehow different from human nature. A form that is slightly off-center—like a moon jar—seemed to resemble people more. Once I began to feel that natural irregularity is what makes something truly beautiful, my work naturally started shifting toward asymmetry.

I’m curious if you have any special stories with clients who own your oh-licht pieces.
Writer Yoko Tawada, who lives in Berlin and writes in German, owns two of my Nubes light sculptures. I once attended one of her readings, and since I was the only Asian person in the audience, we naturally started talking. Later she even visited my studio.

When she moved to a new home, she ordered lamps to hang in her study. Unexpectedly, she chose bold red and blue. She later told me that the lamps feel almost like living creatures in the room.

I’ve always admired her novels, and knowing that she also finds inspiration in my work feels like a meaningful connection between us.

And I’m grateful to my friend Sunyoung @misuleye,

Zum ersten Mal präsentiere ich meine Lichtobjekte in der Documenta-Stadt Kassel und bin zur Eröffnung am 22. November von 10–18 Uhr persönlich vor Ort. Ich freue mich auf euren Besuch.
